Purging and Dryness
As you start using medical-grade products, it's normal to encounter skin purging and dryness. You may be wondering, “If these products are meant to help my skin, why am I breaking out?” Here’s the good news: what looks like a breakout may actually be skin purging.
What is Skin Purging?
Skin purging is your skin's response to active ingredients that boost cell turnover, pushing congestion and old acne to the surface. This process is completely normal and often a sign that the products are working! While it may initially seem alarming, remember that it’s a temporary phase. As your skin begins to shed its old layers you will reveal a brighter, clearer complexion.
Everyone’s skin is different. Those with a history of acne or sun damage may experience more purging than others. Your skin is essentially saying, “Let’s clear out the old to make way for the new!”
A few tips to keep in mind:
- Avoid Picking: Picking can lead to scarring and hinder your skin’s healing process.
- Stay Patient: Adjusting to medical-grade skincare takes time—often around a month or more. Trust the journey!
Over-Exfoliation: A Common Pitfall
Another adjustment may involve dry, flaky skin from over-exfoliation, particularly if you’re new to potent exfoliating products like Koji Clear Pads or Forever Young Retinol. Exfoliation is essential for skin renewal, but it’s easy to go overboard.
Signs of Over-Exfoliation include:
- Dryness and Redness: Your skin may appear inflamed or excessively dry.
- Sensitivity: Other products may start to irritate your skin.
- Uneven Texture: You might notice patchy, red blotches or rough bumps.
If you experience these symptoms, it’s crucial to give your skin a break and perform what we like to call a “Skin Reset”.
Performing an RFA "Skin Reset"
When irritation occurs, consider an “RFA Skin Reset.” This involves stepping back from all exfoliants to allow your skin to heal. Here’s how to do it:
- Pause Exfoliation: Stop using any exfoliating products for 7-10 days.
- Nourish Gently: Switch to a mild cleanser, like our RFA Cleansing Balm (LINK), and a hydrating moisturizer, like Hydralipid Moisturizer (LINK).
- Spot Treatment: Use a rich emollient, like Aquaphor or RFA Rescue Cream (LINK), on particularly irritated areas.
Be patient: Healing can take 2-4 weeks, but your skin will thank you for the TLC!
Reintroducing Exfoliants Slowly
Once your skin has healed, you can gradually reintroduce exfoliating products—one at a time. The key is to start slow and monitor how your skin responds. Remember, hydration plays a crucial role. Balance exfoliation with plenty of hydration, using products like Hydralipid or our RFA Rescue Cream (LINK), which can help soothe and protect your skin barrier.
